What if God was one of us?

Knowing God

Sometimes song lyrics baffle me, for example:

What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us?
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home.

Why would someone write this? I discovered today that the songwriter was born into the Jewish faith. This does help me understand his ponderings a little better. As a follower of Christ-I have been taught by the Holy Spirit and can answer some of his questions.

Can you?

Here’s some help. God is not one of us. But His son Jesus Christ is. Just as God created the world and all that is in it, He too created Christ. Christ is God in human form. He was conceived and birthed here on earth. God is sovereign and reigns in Heaven. But through Jesus He became human – for oursake. So that we may understand and believe and become one of Him.

God is not a slob! He is perfection and His world is in order. We on earth are not in the heavenly realms so we do not experience perfection and order. We experience chaos. God did not want this for us but given free will or free choice mankind chooses chaos.

The result of this chaos is that we are strangers to each other. We don’t really know each other. Even though we think we do. When was the last time you honestly opened your heart, mind and soul to someone? If we were not strangers to each other, we would not feel uncomfortable sharing our thoughts and feelings. We would trust God and each other.

So, in isolation we roam this chaotic world searching for home. Awfully tragic but very common. Home, now what is home? A place, a time or a person. For me it is God. I may not be in God’s Heavenly Kingdom at this point in time, but I know that He is in me. We are one, we are family, and I am home. Just as God became flesh in Jesus Christ God also became spirit in the Holy Spirit. When I accepted Christ as my Saviour I was filled with the Holy Spirit. God’s gift to all who believe. I am permanently with Him as He is permanently with me. I am His and He is where I live my life. He is my home.

And as for the songwriter’s other questions:

If God had a face, what would it look like?
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like Heaven and in Jesus and the saints
And all the prophets? And...

Sheer compassion and graciousness and YES! I WOULD WANT TO SEE!
